Susan Gottlieb is a painter and a teacher residing in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Her artwork focuses on cross-cultural mythology and symbolism and it is this fascination for ancient cultures that takes her to the ends of the earth.  

I travel in an attempt to bring myself into relationship with those cultures similar to my own as well as to those that are very different. My studies continue to reveal cross-cultural threads, and my paintings celebrate the variety of metaphoric expression with respect to that which underlies and connects us all.

 Gottlieb has often been told that there is a spiritual dimension to her artwork and admits it is a mystery how her paintings come about. “I think the creative spirit comes in all guises, and I think that’s what keeps us humane.”

Incorporating universal symbols such as crosses, spirals and circles, Gottlieb interprets icons of the past from the perspective of the present. Landscapes, figures, still life and abstractions are translated into evocative symbolic compositions. Working in acrylic, graphite and oil her work is known for its brilliant use of color and texture.
